Astwood Bank Cricket Club Set for Major Refurbishment After 17 Years

Astwood Bank Cricket Club, a historic club dating back to at least 1860, is set to undergo a major refurbishment of its cricket facilities after 17 years. Founded when four local needle manufacturers joined forces to play against nearby teams, the club has enjoyed decades of success in both friendly and competitive cricket, fostering a strong sense of family and community.

In 2008, Verde Cricket first upgraded the club’s training facilities, replacing an old two-lane net with a modern four-lane system, complete with ground levelling and drainage improvements. Now, Verde is returning to give the facilities a much-needed overhaul, bringing them back to top condition with the latest advancements in cricket surface technology.

The refurbishment will include the installation of ECB-approved Test Match and Premier System surfaces, designed to enhance bounce and pace for players of all ages. These state-of-the-art surfaces will be laid on aggregate and RBGtex, a protective layer preventing aggregate mixing and worm infestations, ensuring long-term durability. Additionally, an AP10 Shock pad will be installed to distribute impact energy evenly, reducing surface indentations and enhancing playing conditions. The club has also requested the addition of new mesh batting screens, designed to improve visibility from the bowling end while helping batters maintain focus on the ball.

With these upgrades set to take place in the coming weeks, Astwood Bank C.C. looks forward to an exciting new chapter. Once completed, the facilities will provide a high-quality training environment for experienced players and the next generation of cricketers. The club remains optimistic about the future as younger players step up to continue its proud legacy.
