Maxxis ACU British Championship Round 4 18/05/14
After Round1, missing Round 2 with an injury and the cancellation of round 3, what a great for Mathew Callagan to make his return to the ACU Maxxis British Championship. The weather was hot, the track was in perfect condition and the crowds came pouring into the Canada Heights track down in Swanley Kent.
Qualifying:
Matty took his time, made a few mistakes and struggled to put a consistent lap together. He finished qualifying in 21st place, but with the track getting better he was looking forward to the first race.
Race 1:
With a pretty good start, Matty set out in race 1 in 16th place. He looked comfortable pushing on, until lap 3 when a silly mistake set him back 5 places. Matty soon regained his rhythm and pushed back to 19th but by this point the pack ahead had got away. With Just 2 laps to go Matty managed to catch and pass Brad Todd just before the chequered flag, gaining 18th place. Showing great fitness to push hard after a tough first race back in the MX2 class.
Race 2:
After a awful start in race 2, it set the tone for the whole race. With 2 or 3 crashes, Matty was left to fight back from 35th position. He finished the Race in a disappointing 27th place, knowing he could have done better.
Race 3:
The last race of the day saw a much better start than race 2. Matty settled into the first few laps in 18th place. He rode consistently throughout, making only a handful of mistakes. But after a long day and his hand still lacking strength he could not improve on any more places, taking 18th at the flag to finish 21st overall on the day.
Overall:
It was really good to see Matty Back racing in the British Championships, following injuries he had suffered earlier in the year. 21st overall was slightly better than he achieved at Landrake, but still a little disappointing as we know Matty is capable of ranking 5 or 6 places higher. However 6 points scored puts him in 28th in the championship with 4 rounds to go, despite missing out round 2 at Lyng.
Quote from Mathew Callaghan:
Its great to be back riding again but frustrating that i am not finishing in the top 15. The bike feels awesome, I just need some more time on the bike before the next round now my hand is on the mend.
Quote from Team Manager Adrian Kirk:
We have had a real up and down day. If Matty can find some consistency he will finish in the top 15. We know he has more to give , but missing a few races with injuries he has lost a bit of confidence.
