This Weekend Matty Callaghan made his return to Racing following a nasty crash
at Culham last month. The Bank holiday weekend started off with a sunny Friday,
putting everyone in high spirits ready for round 2 of the MX Nationals at
Qualifying:
Matty headed out in his group to set out a fast lap in the hope of getting into the main fastest 40 race. The track soon roughed up with the stacked group mixed with some of the fastest 450 and 250 riders in the Country. Matty put his head down and picked smooth lines, placing him in 17th and more importantly securing himself a place in the Pro Race for the weekend.
Race 1:
After 2 false starts and about a hour sat in the pitting area while the organisers tried to fix the dodgy gate, the first Pro Race commenced with a flag start. Mathew got a bad jump on the start but pushed through the pack from 31st place. After moving into 22nd and looking comfortable, he made a small mistake and lost 5 places. The track was now rough and rutty, with time running out Matty crossed the line in 25th and 9th MX2 rider in his first race back.
Race 2:
Matty got out of the gate much better in race 2, but then struggled to compete with the power of the 450 bikes into the first corner. He fought his way through once again, trying to ride smooth. After a few mistakes and coming off the bike he continued to push to the flag, finishing in a respectable
27th place and 13th in MX2. But Matty was disappointed as he knew he could of done better!
Race 3:
Another excellent jump out the gate for race 3, but as with race 2, he came round the first corner at the back of the pack. Matty kept focused on moving through the pack and not making mistakes as he did in the previous races. He rode exceptionally well and with only a few mistakes managed to keep passing riders to flag for a 24th place finish in the last fastest 40 race of the day and 10th MX2 rider.
Overall:
After such a nasty crash at the first round 1 month ago, it was great to see Matty racing and almost back to his full race fitness. He finished a well earned 26th overall and 10th overall out of the MX2 riders. With a few more races under his belt Matty will soon back to full fitness and ready to keep improving every weekend.
Mathew Callaghan:
'' I thought I could have done better this weekend, but I was pleased with the way I rode in the last race. I have to work on my starts and I need a little more race fitness for the next round at Whitby in 2 weeks.''
Team Manager Adrian Kirk:
" Mathew did what he needed to do this weekend, getting 3 races under his belt after some time off. We know we can build from here and improve for the next few meetings. "
